Vague promise

“Unlock” hints at value and keeps it locked away.

Unlock suggests the reader already has something valuable that the product will release. The trouble is that the sentence rarely says what is behind the door, so the reader is left with a metaphor instead of a benefit.

How we counted
01 / What the writer means

What the writer is trying to say.

Writers use unlock to describe access to something new: insights from data, growth from a channel, productivity from AI or a feature on a higher plan. The idea is that the value already exists and the product makes it reachable.

02 / Why it fails

Why it stops working.

Unlock has become one of the default verbs of software marketing, especially for AI features, and readers now pass over it. “Unlock powerful insights” could describe any analytics product, and “unlock growth” could describe anything at all.

The metaphor also postpones the point. Whatever is being unlocked is the real benefit, and the sentence would be stronger if it started there.

03 / Say this instead

Say what you actually mean.

Pick the alternative that matches what you were trying to say. Most of the time the fix is a specific detail, not a better adjective.

If you meanThey’ll learn something from their data
  • Say the insight: “See which customers are about to churn.”
  • Say the question it answers
If you meanThey’ll grow
  • Name the mechanism: “Turn trial users into customers with in-app prompts.”
  • Give a real result with a source
If you meanThey get access to a feature
  • Name the feature and the plan: “API access on the Business plan.”
  • Get, Add, Includes
04 / Before and after

The same sentence, made specific.

  1. Before

Unlock powerful insights about your audience.

    After

See which emails each subscriber opens, and which ones make them unsubscribe.

The insight itself is the selling point.

  2. Before

Unlock the full potential of your team.

    After

Give every manager a weekly view of who is overloaded and who has room for more.

Replaces a motivational poster with a feature.

How Revisi flags it

Revisi flags it under Clarity.

Revisi flags unlock when the sentence doesn’t name what is being unlocked in concrete terms. The finding asks for the insight, outcome or feature the metaphor is standing in for.

“Unlock”: common questions

Start with whatever was behind the door: the insight, the result or the feature. For plan features, plain verbs such as “get” or “includes” work better.

AI features are often hard to describe concretely, and unlock suggests value without having to define it. Readers have seen it so often that it now signals vagueness rather than power.

Yes. Of all the variations, “unlock the power of” is the least informative, because it names neither the power nor what it does.
